This module reviews the basic principles of chemical bonding as they apply to organic molecules and introduces the concepts of functional groups, nomenclature, stereochemistry, and reaction mechanisms. It also covers the systematic chemistry of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, and ethers. The theory and use of spectroscopy in identifying organic compounds is included. Working through this course, students are expected to apply their knowledge to solving problems, deducing structures, and synthesizing simple organic molecules using the reactions studied. The relationship between organic chemistry and other disciplines are noted.
This module also covers aromatic compounds, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, and organic nitrogen compounds. Synthesis using carbanion and enolate ion methods are emphasized. The chemistry of various organic compounds found in biological systems: carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins and peptides, and nucleic acids will also be addressed.
